SEO, which stands for search engine optimization, is all about understanding how the search engines work and what to do to make them work for you. SEO is now the norm for all advertising purposes. One does need to know a little about the different search engines and how they work to effectively use SEO. Keep in mind when you choose to advertise on Yahoo, your ads are only seen by people using the Yahoo search engine. This is the same for Google as well. We will examine the top search engines that you can choose to target for your advertising campaign.

  • Google- This is probably the giant when it comes to search engines. In the recent years, Google has been the search engine of choice for many. When choosing where to start your advertising campaign, it may be a wise choice to go with Google. Google has partnered with various smart phones, so people are using Google from their phones.  This has served to increase the popularity of Google. When you advertise with Google, you will be using something called Adwords. This is pay per click style advertising and you will be able to choose how much you would like to bid per keyword. There are some handy tools that you can use that will help to get your content on the first page. Google also has a variety of partners. What this means for you as a business owner is that you will be advertising your business or service on a variety of platforms.
  • Yahoo/Bing- Yahoo is also a good choice when it comes to advertising. They also offer the click to pay advertising module like Google. They are popular when it comes to search engine users. They have however teamed up with Bing. Bing is another search engine. While it may the new kid on the block, is rising in popularity. Many people still use Yahoo as their choice of search engines and this is especially true for people who are also using the Yahoo mail. Yahoo advertising will allow you to be advertised on Yahoo, Bing and some other small partners. You can set up your own budget. Yahoo has a faster response time when it comes to customer service. If you need help with your advertising campaign, you can generally expect to get help within a few hours. They also offer a live help where you can chat with someone from the Yahoo team.
  • MSN- This is probably the least popular of the three but can still be a viable choice. MSN advertising is also a bit cheaper than the other 2 and can be a great place to start for a business working on a small budget. MSN was once a giant in their day, but due to the smart phone partnering up with Google, has become less and less popular. The way advertising works on MSN is just like Yahoo and Google. You can expect a smaller amount of traffic as this is the search engine that is used least. There has been talk about MSN partnering with some smart phones as well, so changes could be coming when it comes to using MSN as a way to advertise.
  • Meta-engines-. This is a somewhat new approach when it comes to searching for something on the internet. These are search engines that will search from many different places at once. These work differently because instead of creating a directory of their own, they search from a variety of already existing directories. This is one way that businesses can reach all the search engines at once. The most common one can be found at www.metacrawler.com. This will grab all the related keywords for all the popular search engines such as Yahoo, Google and Bing and present them all for the searcher to choose from. One can easily see the benefit would have for business.

Advertising on search engines can greatly increase your website traffic.  Choose the one that works best for your business.
