The very first thing that you will need to do in order to get the full use of all the services that Google provides is to install a tracking code. This is to verify that you are the owner of the site, or at least have the permission to see all the detailed information that is provided. This is a fairly simple and straight forward process.
You will need to log into your account and get your code. This is a specific code that has been generated just for you and your web page. Do make sure that you are using the correct one. There will be a html code that is generated for you. You will want to copy and paste that code on every page that you want to track. It is important that you place the code in the right spot. You will want to place this tracking code immediately before the closing head tag. This tag will look like </head>, and it needs to be at the end and not the beginning. Make sure the symbols match exactly.
After the code has been installed you will want to make sure that you have done it correctly. If you have it in the wrong spot, it will not be able to track the information that you need. On your overview page you will see something called website profiles. Go ahead and click and check the status of the page you have just added the tracking for. Once the system detects the code, you will see a green check box and this means that the code has been installed properly. If you see tracking status unknown, this could mean 2 things. The first being that they system has just not picked up the code yet or it could mean that you have placed the code in the wrong spot.
If after 24 hours you do not see any data and are still seeing traffic code unknown, then the chances are great that you have installed the code wrong. If you need help making sure the code is right you can search the Google forums or have the person, if not you, that designed your website show you where this code needs to go.
